St. John's Wort, Hypericum perforatum, has aromatic, culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. Yellow blooms in summer. Grows 24-42”. Zone 3-8. Fragrant hardy perennial. Leaves are covered with tiny perforations—oil glands. Lovely yellow lemon scented flowers appear in late summer. The leaves are used in salads and to fl avor liquors. Taken internally it is believed to calm the nerves and treat depression. Can cause dermatitis. Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
