Chives, Allium schoenoprasum, has culinary and ornamental uses. Purple flowers in summer. Grows 12”. Chives are native to Greece, Sweden, the Alps and Britain. They are onion-like but on a much smaller scale and multiply year after year. Divide them in spring or fall. Their grass-like blue-green foliage is attractive as edging for beds or walkways and the plants produce lovely purple flowers in summer. Chives taste like mild sweet onions and are used for their flavor and as a garnish. They mix well with most vegetables, creamy sauces and eggs. The blooms are edible as well, and are lovely tossed into salads. Chives are extremely easy to grow. Cut back to 4” two or three times a season to promote tender new growth. They like a moderately rich, well-drained soil in full sun.
