Basil, Ocimum basilicum, has aromatic, culinary, and ornamental uses. Grows 1-3’. No summer menu is complete without the flavor of fresh basil. This easy-to-grow annual will reward your efforts with its unique flavor and aroma. Basil is widely used in pesto and tomato sauces and adds much to the flavor of many foods. Basil works well with many mild-flavored vegetables, fish, poultry, beans, pasta, rice, tomatoes, eggs and cheese. Basil is a warm season annual that grows well in a rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. To encourage branching, basil should be pruned frequently. Some varieties (African Blue) are very attractive to butterflies. Cut back before flowering to keep the plants producing leafy branches. Scroll down to see available varieties.


African Blue................Grows 24". Striking ornamental basil with dark green leaves, flushed with purple veins. Long pinkish-purple flower spikes all season long. Excellent plant for small insect pollinators. A sterile hybrid that is occasionally used in cooking.
Greek Columnar...............Grows 2 1/2' by 1'. This unique miniature-leaved basil maintains its tight columnar shape all season. Non-flowering. Great ornamental and container plant with good flavor. Does well indoors in winter
Pesto Perpetuo.................. Grows 4' by 1-2'. Zone 9-11. The first variegated basil - a sport of Greek Columnar Basil with a hint of lemon. A superb culinary selection! Its light green leaves with creamy variegation makes it a real eye-catcher as well
Rubin.............Grows 18". One of the best purple basils with smooth dark leaves and strong growth. Great flavor and very ornamental. (temporarily SOLD OUT)
Sweet Large Leaf....................Grows 12-18" by 9-12". Large green leaves with terrific aroma and taste. The standard for culinary basil.
Thai Siam Queen.......................Grows 18". Anise-scented leaves on a compact, well-branched plant. Tight purplish flower spikes above bright green leaves. Popular seasoning herb for stir-fry dishes. Good for containers. (temporarily SOLD OUT)
